Efforts are being made to provide 100 backpacks to veterans who are homeless in Omaha.

Bellevue University still accepts hand warmers and snacks for veterans living in Francis of Siena. The school’s military service center will deliver these packages on Thursday’s Veterans’ Day.

In the past few weeks, volunteers and veterans have collected items and packed their luggage on campus.

"I come from a large number of veterans and have been back to the revolutionary period," said Lynn Bullock, an army nurse. "For many of them, it is very difficult to find any job or at least anything to support themselves and own their own house."

Hundreds of veterans sought refuge at the Francis House in Siena and endured cold days in the winter.

Organizers added thermal cloaks to keep body temperature and keep veterans warm until they find their way.

"This is our chance to bring them Veterans Day," said Heather Carroll of Bellevue University. "They cannot participate in most of the Veterans Day events that the facility provides for them."

You can still donate hand warmers and snacks to the university at 2108 Harvell Drive in Bellevue.
