Andrea Johnson/MDN Amber Gust, 7, Sophia Huwe, 7, and Jailyn Davis, 11, helped pack backpacks filled with school supplies that will be given away to other kids who need them on Aug. 22 during the backpack giveaway at the Minot Salvation Army.

The Minot Salvation Army will give away about 250 to 300 backpacks to students in grades K-12 on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1-3 p.m.

The Salvation Army is located at 315 Western Avenue.

Capt. John Woodard said the backpacks were packed by volunteers and contain school supplies that have been donated through efforts such as the Minot Rotary’s Fill the Bus campaign.

There are backpacks intended for elementary, middle and high school students. The Salvation Army also has a few scientific calculators that can be used for high school classes.

The backpacks are free and are available to any family that needs one for their child, said Woodard.

Amber Gust, 7, Sophia Huwe, 7, and Jailyn Davis, 11, were among the children and adults who helped pack the backpacks that were neatly lined against the wall at the Salvation Army on Monday, waiting to go to their new owners.

Schools around the area are starting classes this week and next week.
