The contest was part of this summer’s Wizard of Oz exhibit and required participants to search for secret words throughout the Elgin area.

Those who found 10 words received a backpack and anyone who located all 31 received a water bottle and bag and were entered into a drawing to win the grand prize gift basket.

Scavenger hunt participants scanned QR storefront codes more than 3,500 times, library officials said.

The Chicago Transit Authority is holding a special 75th anniversary celebration from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin.

The event provides a chance to view trains from the CTA collection, including a Chicago City Railways 1908 electric locomotive L202, a recently restored crane car S-314 and a 1947 Pullman-Standard steel-aluminum car 5001. The cars will be stationed along the museum’s line.

Rides will be given on a recently restored 1925 Chicago Elevated Car 4451 and some of the museum’s 1959 St. Louis single cars.

Tickets cost $25 for museum members and $50 for nonmembers. For more information, go to www.foxtrolley.org.

Volunteer lawyers will be providing free legal services and advice this month at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

A clinic on how to expunge a criminal offenses committed in Kane County will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 17. Those attending should bring court documents, case numbers and valid identification to receive assistance.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 22 and Oct. 27, lawyers will be available to assist people who have legal questions.

Legal coaching, document review and referrals to other community services will be provided. A law librarian and an Illinois Justice Corps Fellow will be on hand to suggest resources and assist with e-filing court documents, a news release said.

Participants should bring paperwork related to their legal issues. Meetings will last about 15 minutes and are available in English and Spanish.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, a virtual program on how to find free or low-cost legal help for consumer debt, housing, family law, employment, probate, veterans’ rights and cannabis conviction expungement will be held. It’s being presented by the Coordinated Advice & Referral Program.

Representatives from more than 150 colleges and universities are signed up to participate in Elgin Community College’s free college fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The event is designed to help students and their families explore continuing education options. It will be held in Building J, Events Center, on ECC’s 1700 Spartan Drive campus in Elgin.

Advance registration is required at app.strivescan.com/registration. Registered attendees will receive a barcode that can be scanned by colleges, automatically adding them to mailing lists.

Representatives from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission also will be on hand to provide information about financial aid.

Hanover Township is seeking volunteers to make food deliveries and pickups and to work at its food pantry, 7431 Astor Ave. in Hanover Park.

Drivers pick up and drop off donations made to the food pantry and load and unload the township van they use. Volunteers also help stock shelves, freezers and refrigerators and help pack food orders for delivery to homebound residents in the township, which includes Elgin.
