Pittsburgh man sentenced for violating federal gun laws | USAO-WDPA | Department of Justice

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-A former resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by a federal court to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release (the first 180 days of home detention) for violating the U.S. federal gun laws. Attorney Cindy K. Chung announced today.

Judge Donetta W. Ambrose sentenced 53-year-old Matthew Michanowicz, whose predecessor was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15211.

According to the information provided to the court, on May 31, 2020, Michanovic knew and illegally held firearms, that is, three destructive devices, but they were not registered in the national firearm registration and transfer records. Specifically, Michanowicz admitted that on or about May 31, 2020, he placed three unregistered homemade destructive devices in a camouflage backpack at 2 PNC Plaza in downtown Pittsburgh.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar (Jessica Lieber Smolar) prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

U.S. Attorney Cindy K. Chung praised the investigations by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pittsburgh Police Department and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office for successfully prosecuting Michanowicz.
