Chrome Unboxed-The latest Chrome OS news

A space for everything like Chrome, Google, etc.!

This weekend, I did something with a Chromebook that I had never done before. I threw it on the concrete. Please note that this is a small fall, but the end result is also disastrous. I cycled to dinner on Thanksgiving weekend and watched some football games. As the game ended, I felt a little disgusted with the status quo of the Tennessee Titans. Therefore, I closed the Lenovo Duet 5 tablet I was watching, and slid the closed slate between my seat and the door, satisfied that I didn’t have to look at today’s ass anymore.

About 20 minutes later, we arrived at the destination, ready to spend quality time with our family. After walking for a short distance, I hurriedly got out of the car, forgot the Chromebook hanging on the balance beside the seat, opened the door, and it fell into the driveway. This is a very small drop-up to 18 inches-but enough to cause some serious damage. The tablet is reopened and the keyboard cover is in place, but there is nothing in the corner to prevent it from falling, which means some serious damage. Take a look.

For example: Chromebooks that are not built for durability are not durable. I know this may be clear, but this is not something I often think about. There are reasons for this. For Chromebooks, I usually put them in my backpack when I'm not using them. That cushion acts as a protector for my Chromebook when I’m out, and I usually only take out my device when I’m on the table, desk, or sofa. With this habit, I didn’t have any drops or problems when I bumped my Chromebook to the ground.

However, after using the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5, I have been walking around with this thin and light tablet for weeks without a backpack or protective cover. You will see this in the comments later this week, but when I leave the office, this Chromebook has always been my go-to device, and I really like not having to carry a backpack to and from the office every day. However, for some reason, I never thought of putting it in a sleeve or anything. Once again, getting used to the backpack as a defense mechanism for my Chromebook, I just didn't think twice.

But this drop and the resulting screen cracking made me really think about what needs to be done to protect my Chromebook from moving forward. As someone who doesn't mind carrying a backpack with you all the time, I think this will be my preferred strategy. But with the emergence of more and more thin and light Chromebook tablets, I know that I want to minimize the occurrence of things and return to the fast-carrying scene when I was using Duet 5. So what?

I think that for those of us who think backpacks are not the most suitable for daily carrying, some kind of sleeve becomes essential. Chromebooks don’t have a cover that can be grabbed, so the best way is to place some material between the device and the hard surface. A simple small neoprene sleeve can do this. You can find sleeves in various shapes and sizes at Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers.

If you don’t plan to buy a larger, more drop-resistant Chromebook, you should really think about it now. If you like to carry your bag with you, it should be adequately drop-resistant in most cases, but adding a layer of security through some kind of sleeve may still be a good idea. Trust me, you don't want the heartbreaking feeling when I picked up the tablet from the concrete yesterday and saw the broken screen. This can certainly be avoided, so take precautions now. You will thank me.
